Product engineering · outer shell

A windbreaker begins with the shell brief

Weight, material, seam execution, and finish should be developed together. Define the intended use and measurable requirements before sampling.

Shell materials

Choose a fabric direction

These ranges are material development references. Confirm the actual fabric lot and finish in sampling.

01

20D–40D nylon micro-ripstop

40–65 GSM

Light shell option

02

Crinkle nylon Taslan

110–150 GSM

Textured shell option

03

50D–75D polyester taffeta

60–90 GSM

Lightweight polyester shell

04

Mechanical stretch polyester

90–120 GSM

Stretch shell option

05

2.5-layer bonded polyester or nylon with TPU

110–140 GSM

Layered construction to define in the specification

Technical handoff

Put the options into a testable brief

Avoid relying on a fabric name alone. Identify the material, construction, process, evidence, and acceptance criteria required for the garment.

01

Seam choice

401 chainstitch or double-lap seam as specified

02

Stitch density

10–12 SPI planning reference

03

Coating and seam tape

List as requested options and confirm the actual supplier capability and sample

04

Sublimation

Sublimation on a white polyester shell before cutting is an option; confirm material and artwork compatibility

Sample and production sequence

Agree the performance before bulk

PHASE 01

Material

Confirm shell, lining if any, finish, weight, color, and lot references.

PHASE 02

Pattern and sample

Approve fit, seam execution, closures, hood or cuff details, and agreed measurements.

PHASE 03

Performance

Write the required test method and acceptance criteria into the brief. No hydrostatic-head target is specified here.

PHASE 04

Bulk control

Tie production to the approved PP or golden sample, order-specific POM tolerances, and agreed inspections.

Windbreaker questions

What to confirm in development

What shell weight should I choose?

Illustrative shell weights are 40–70 GSM for lightweight micro-ripstop, 80–140 GSM as a standard range, and 110–160 GSM for an oversized direction. Confirm hand feel and construction in a sample.

Can I specify waterproof performance?

State the desired performance and test method in the brief, then confirm whether the proposed material and construction can meet it. No hydrostatic-head range or performance guarantee is provided here.

What construction details should be in the tech pack?

Specify shell composition and weight, seam type, stitch density, closures, pocket details, finishing, fit measurements, and any coating or seam-tape requirements.

Can the shell be sublimation printed?

Sublimation on a white polyester shell before cutting is a listed option. Confirm the exact shell, artwork, and process with the supplier during development.

How long does the order take?

Planning references are 10–15 days for sample production plus 3–5 days courier, and 15–20 days for bulk after formal PP sign-off. Confirm against materials, quantity, and supplier schedule.
