Garment Fabric Consumption Calculator

Estimate knit fabric mass per dozen or woven length per garment from points of measure, GSM, pattern area, cuttable width, marker efficiency and a chosen allowance.

Enter approved specification values

Circular knit estimate

Use measurements from the approved tech pack and effective cuttable width. This is a planning estimate; confirm final yield with a physical or CAD marker.

Calculation method

Keep the units visible

Circular knit · kg per dozen

((length + sleeve) × half-chest × 2 × GSM × 12 ÷ 10,000,000) × (1 + wastage ÷ 100)

Length, sleeve and half-chest are centimeters; GSM is grams per square meter.

Woven · linear yards per garment

(pattern area ÷ (cuttable width × 36)) × (100 ÷ marker efficiency) × (1 + wastage ÷ 100)

Pattern area is square inches and cuttable width is inches. Efficiency is entered as a percentage.

Limitations

The marker plan is still the final check

01

Direction and pile

Directional print, nap, pile or plaid may require one-way layouts and change yield.

02

Relaxation and shrinkage

Include applicable relaxation and shrinkage allowances in the approved pattern plan.

03

Pattern complexity

Pockets, pocket bags, double-layer hoods and plackets add area beyond a basic body-and-sleeve estimate.

04

Final marker

A validated CAD marker remains the controlling basis for a material purchase order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this fabric consumption calculator compared to direct factory markers?

This calculator provides a baseline engineering estimate within ± 3% to 5% of actual CAD marker outputs for standard garment silhouettes. Complex styling, asymmetrical patterns, or specific directional matching require formal CAD marker generation during the sampling phase.

Are wastage allowances automatically factored into the baseline calculation?

Yes, the formula includes a customizable wastage percentage variable. The industry baseline standard defaults to 5% to 7% for plain knits and 8% to 12% for engineered match prints, woven plaids, or narrow cuttable fabric widths.

What is the difference between tubular and open-width knit fabric consumption?

Tubular knits eliminate side seam waste but are constrained by fixed body-width diameters. Open-width knits allow flexible multi-size marker layouts, yielding higher overall cutting efficiency on CAD-driven spreaders.

How does Fenalt manage fabric consumption and procurement during production?

Fenalt acts as a fully managed apparel manufacturing solution. We audit your technical packs, verify consumption metrics via CAD marker optimization, source raw materials from vetted textile mills, and execute production under strict quality controls—including ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 Level II inspection standards with an AQL 2.5 acceptance threshold.

What dimensional tolerances apply to final production outputs?

Fenalt applies standard commercial apparel industry tolerances across all points of measure (POM). Pre-production sample sign-offs establish the binding benchmark for all subsequent bulk runs.
