Small-batch clothing production for brands in Portugal
A small run starts with a clear brief, quantities by style and recorded decisions about the sample and quality. Fenalt coordinates development and production with partners selected for each project; production location and feasibility depend on the specification.
Prepare the brief
Make the small run specific
Separate the first order from any repeat forecast, then break quantities down by style, colour and size. Do not assume styles or variants can be pooled to meet a minimum without confirmation: material, construction, dyeing and finishing can change what is workable.
- Garment and use
- Garment type, intended use, and reference images, sketches or samples.
- Specification
- Current technical pack, measurements, points of measure, sizes and grading; known composition, construction, weight, stretch, colour and finish.
- Variants
- Quantities by style, colour and size; prints, embroidery, labels, fasteners, other components and branding placement.
- Delivery and decisions
- Packaging, intended destination, target date and open decisions. Record who can approve alternatives and changes.
A material or finish change may affect the sample, quote or schedule. Keep the specification version used for approvals identifiable.
Sample and production
Resolve decisions before authorising the run
Review the technical brief
Align on product, quantities, materials, variants and open questions before sampling.
Assess the sample
Record comments on measurements and fit, material, colour, seams, finishing, components and branding; identify the version reviewed.
Approve the production specification
Connect approval to the correct sample and technical pack, quantities and agreed acceptance criteria.
Fenalt's operational reference for sample production is 10–15 days, with a separate 3–5 day sample-shipping reference. The bulk-production reference is 15–20 days from pre-production sample sign-off to export dispatch. These are planning references, not arrival promises for Portugal. Confirm milestones in the project quote.
Agreed criteria
Define what will be checked
Record measurement points, tolerances, colour and material references, construction, relevant defects, inspection stage and acceptance criteria. Fenalt's reference is AQL 2.5 under ANSI/ASQ Z1.4, General Level II, when confirmed in the agreed quality plan. AQL is statistical sampling: it does not mean every garment is inspected or guarantee zero defects. Non-conformities are reviewed against the agreed standard and suitable corrective action is coordinated with the production partner.
Destination market
Review the product's textile information
European Commission guidance says that, in general, covered textile products—including apparel containing at least 80% textile fibres by weight—must identify their fibre composition. When a product is made available to consumers in an EU country, label text must be in the official language or languages required in that market, unless national law provides otherwise. Scope, exceptions and responsibilities depend on the product and transaction. Verify composition with reliable material data and have a specialist review label wording before approving artwork. See the European Commission's textile label guidance and Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011. This page does not determine whether a specific garment complies or replace professional advice.
Also identify who is responsible for checks that apply to the product, sales channel, operator and destination. Fibre information is not a complete list of every possible market-placement requirement.
Delivery and responsibilities
Confirm terms for the actual order
State the intended destination—mainland Portugal, the Azores or Madeira—, production origin when known, and who will handle documents, transport and import formalities. Territory and transaction details may affect tax and customs review; confirm the applicable treatment with the importer and its advisers. Fenalt's approved references are DAP for small-batch courier shipments and FOB Chattogram for bulk sea freight, subject to origin, destination, shipment size and the agreed Incoterm. Confirm the named place or port and split of responsibilities in the quote.
Do not infer a customs or VAT rate, origin preference, total landed cost, clearance time or arrival date in Portugal. For a specific transaction, the importer and its advisers should confirm classification, documents, taxes and applicable responsibilities.
To start a review, see manufacturing services, the coordination process, or send a project brief. An enquiry does not confirm capacity, price or schedule.
