Closures engineered for the garment

Button Sourcing for Apparel Production

A garment button is both a visual signature and a mechanical closure. Material, Ligne size, profile, hole architecture, finish, and pull strength must fit the fabric and stress point.

Fenalt manages resin, shell, horn, corozo, metal, urea, and branded button development from specification through line-ready inspection.

Direct answer

Size the closure to the fabric and load

Button sourcing succeeds when the closure is specified with the garment. Light shirting can use small, thin buttons; tailored jackets need thicker profiles and counter-buttons; denim and workwear need tack or shank hardware that survives washing and pull forces.

Fenalt coordinates substrates, dimensions, attachment geometry, finish, chemical safety, and machinery compatibility so the approved button reaches the production line ready to use.

Applications

Button profiles by garment use

Shirting

14L–18L polyester, MOP, or trocas with 2-hole or 4-hole attachment and high luster.

Tailoring

24L–32L horn, corozo, or faux-horn resin with deep rim profiles and counter-button backing.

Denim and workwear

24L–36L brass, copper, or zinc tack buttons that withstand stone washing and enzyme treatments.

Casual knits

18L–24L urea or polyester with matte, chalk, or rubberized finishes for jersey and fleece.

Ligne sizing

Translate international sizes into a usable spec

One Ligne equals 0.635 mm. Size, thickness, and profile should be reviewed alongside the buttonhole and placket construction.

Substrate and mechanics

Material and fastening architecture matter

Resin

Unsaturated polyester offers DTM color, transparency options, and dry-cleaning resistance.

Natural

Corozo, trocas/MOP, and horn bring grain, luster, and biodegradable or natural character.

Metal

Zinc alloy, brass, and steel support heavy strain with antique brass, gunmetal, nickel, or e-coat finishes.

Urea and melamine

Thermosetting compounds bring impact and scratch resistance for military, workwear, and institutional use.

4-hole flat

X or parallel stitches distribute shear at heavy stress points.

2-hole flat

Clean appearance and rapid automated attachment for light-to-midweight shirting.

Shank and tack

Raised loops accommodate thick plackets; press studs need calibrated force to avoid yarn severing.

Testing and planning

Release hardware with evidence

Dimensions

Use calipers to check diameter, edge thickness, hole distance, and tolerance.

Visual quality

Screen resin voids, flash lines, uneven pearlescence, and engraving quality.

Strength

Use pull-force and impact testing for closure retention and safety.

Safety and fastness

Check REACH/CPSIA lead and nickel requirements plus laundering and dry-cleaning resistance.

Questions and answers

Button sourcing FAQs

What is a Ligne?

Ligne is the international button sizing unit. One Ligne equals 0.635 millimeters, or 1/40 of an inch.

Which button materials are available?

Fenalt can coordinate unsaturated polyester resin, urea or melamine, corozo, natural shell, horn, brass, steel, zinc alloy, recycled polyester, and other specified substrates.

Can buttons be color-matched?

Yes. Polyester, corozo, and coated metal buttons can be matched to PMS references or physical shell-fabric swatches through DTM development.

How are buttons tested?

Lots are checked for diameter, thickness, hole clearance, visual defects, pull strength, impact, chemical safety, laundering, and dry-cleaning fastness as appropriate.

What production terms apply?

Fenalt’s managed garment MOQ starts at 50 pieces per style. Sampling takes 10–15 days plus 3–5 days shipping; bulk turnaround is 15–20 days from PP approval to export dispatch.
