Start with the claim

A material is not a complete sustainability plan

Set the product scope first: which styles use the material, what share of the garment it represents, what documentation a buyer or marketplace requires, and how the claim will be described to customers. Do not treat a fiber name as proof of every environmental or social attribute.

For an organic or recycled input, ask which standard or chain-of-custody document applies, whether the material is certified at the relevant stage, and which transaction records connect it to the finished order. Keep the final wording within the evidence actually available. Certification names and logo use should be checked against the applicable scheme and its current rules.

The project brief should distinguish verified inputs from goals, such as preferred packaging or reduced waste. A supplier statement, a certificate, a transaction certificate and a laboratory report have different purposes; collect the record that supports each claim instead of treating these documents as interchangeable.

Material pathways

Choose by performance, evidence and availability

Organic cotton, recycled synthetics and cellulosic fibers each raise different questions. The correct option depends on hand feel, durability, color, end use, price target, minimums and documentation, rather than a single label.

Organic cotton

Confirm the requested fiber content, fabric construction, color route and evidence scheme before choosing a mill. Ask whether the document covers the relevant material and transaction, and how the fabric is allocated to the style.

For a knit, compare gauge, weight, recovery and shrinkage against the approved sample. For a woven, review construction, finishing and the intended wash. A material claim does not remove the need to test the finished fabric and garment for the product's performance requirements.

Recycled synthetics

Specify whether recycled polyester or another synthetic is required, the target blend, yarn or fabric construction, and evidence expected from each supply-chain stage. Check colorfastness, pilling, stretch recovery or abrasion where relevant to the product.

Performance garments can include elastane, trims, coatings or membranes. Record the full bill of materials so that a claim is not unintentionally generalized beyond the component that has supporting evidence.

Cellulosic fibers

Identify the specific fiber and source requirements rather than using a broad category label. Compare drape, strength, care behavior, weight and finish on a development sample, and request the evidence relevant to the selected route.

Blended fabrics and finishing can affect both the hand and the documentation trail. Approve the actual construction and retain the approved material reference for bulk comparison.

Product and production fit

Build an achievable brief around the garment

Fenalt supports review for knits and loungewear, woven casualwear, outerwear and technical garments, and denim or casual bottoms. The achievable construction depends on the selected partner, materials, finish and order scope. Share a complete tech pack where available, including graded measurements, bill of materials, artwork, construction details, tolerances, labels and packing instructions.

A stock fabric may reduce development steps but can limit color, weight or repeat availability. Custom yarn, dyeing, finishing or a specialty component adds supplier minimums and dependencies. Confirm available quantity, shade-lot handling, testing, reserve material and repeat-order conditions before you lock a launch quantity.

A useful sequence is feasibility and material review, prototype sampling, fit and construction comments, pre-production approval, bulk manufacturing, agreed inspection checkpoints and shipment. Each approval should identify the sample version, measurement chart, color standard and construction that will govern production. Revisions change the schedule and may change the material plan, so close open decisions before authorizing the next step.

Sampling and order minimums are style-specific. They depend on fabric source and lot, color count, decoration, trim, pattern complexity and production setup. Request a quote that separates development, material commitments, sewing, inspection and freight assumptions instead of treating a single minimum as universal.

Textile labels and fiber content

Confirm the fiber composition and label information for the product and destination market with your importer or regulatory adviser. Review language, care, origin and any required product details before labels are printed. The seller remains responsible for verifying current obligations for the product sold.

Chemical and environmental requirements

Share the relevant restricted-substance list and testing expectations at intake. Review dyes, prints, coatings, finishes and trims as well as the base fabric. Requirements depend on material, intended use and market rules; obtain current specialist advice for compliance decisions and define any laboratory test scope per order.

Packaging and circularity

Decide how garments will be packed, what packaging materials are requested and what records are needed for the destination market. Packaging and producer-responsibility rules can change and depend on the role of the seller and product. Verify current Italian and EU obligations for the planned sale rather than assuming a manufacturing partner's process determines them.

Seasonal planning

Work backward from the in-market date through specification completion, material readiness, sample revisions, bulk capacity, inspection, export booking and import clearance. Leave room for approval and route variation. No single transit or production duration applies to every style or shipment.

Cost, freight and oversight

Compare the full order, not only the garment price

For each style, separate development and sample charges, materials, production, inspection, packing, freight, insurance if selected, and import costs. A quote should say which party books transport, where responsibility changes, and which named place or port applies.

With DAP, the named destination and import-clearance and tax responsibilities need to be made clear in the sale arrangement. With FOB, confirm the named port, export handover and the buyer's forwarder responsibilities. The precise term and place matter; do not infer them from a shorthand label.

Customs duty and tax depend on product classification, origin, shipment value and current rules. Verify the classification and treatment for the actual goods with current official customs guidance or a qualified broker. Fenalt can coordinate agreed production and shipment information, but the buyer/importer should confirm its own obligations.

Quality plan, written before bulk
